Obituary of John J. "Jack" Dwyer

Rensselaer - In the early hours of Thursday, December 7, 2017, John J. Dwyer, 86 years old, passed away peacefully. He was born in Waterford, NY to the late Daniel and Isabelle Dwyer. He is predeceased by his brother Robert Dwyer and his sister Dorothy Valencia. Jack joined the United States Air Force in 1951 and was active until 1953. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Shortly after active duty, Jack began working at National Commercial Bank. It is there that he met the love of his life, Joan Kugler. They were married on June 26, 1954. In 1956, Jack was appointed Deputy City Treasurer of the City of Rensselaer. His first elected term of office as City Treasurer began on January 1, 1959. After 33 years of service to the City of Rensselaer, Jack retired in December of 1992. Jack was a member of Pumper #4, Honorary Life Member of Rensselaer Council #267 K of C and the Gerald O'Neill Post. Jack was an avid Mets Fan!! Jack is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joan Kugler Dwyer, who he loved taking to the ocean every year for vacation. They loved to spend time together in Maine, especially at Nubble Lighthouse. Devoted father of his two children, daughter Elaine (Steven) Bullinger and son Paul (Deborah) Dwyer; his grandchildren Erin, Steven, Katie, Brian, Tiffany and Shannon; great-grandchildren Xavier, Elias and Isaiah. He is also survived by his brother, Mayor Daniel Dwyer, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Jack was a kind, fun, caring spirit who enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandpups Sadie, Clancy, Maggie and Finnley. He will be missed, but always loved by his family and his dear friends. Special thanks to Dr. John Filippone, Amy and staff at St. Peter's Heart Failure Clinic; and also to the nursing Staff of Van Rensselaer Manor. Funeral will be from the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer Monday morning at 9:00 am and 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph's Church Herrick Street Rensselaer where the liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 3-6 PM. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in Jack's honor.
