Obituary of Charles Van Alstyne, Jr.

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Troy- Charles Van Alstyne, Jr., age 68, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Samaritan Hospital in Troy.  He was born in Albany, raised in Rensselaer, and resided in Troy for 20 years, with his wife Kathy. He then moved to East Greenbush with his daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and dog Stella.

Charlie was a hardworking man and pursued a career as a Millwright in the cement industry. He spent many years employed by Lafarge, in Ravena, using his skills to contribute to the growth and success of the company. He previously worked for Portec and BASF, where he formed lifelong friendships.

Not only did Charlie excel in his career, but he also selflessly served his community as a volunteer EMT for Rensselaer EMS in the 1990s. His commitment to helping others in their time of need reflected his compassionate nature and kind-hearted spirit. Charlie was known for his generosity, always willing to give the shirt off his back to those in need.

In his leisure time, Charlie enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He relished dining out with loved ones and appreciated the beauty of the outdoors. Sitting in his rocking chair, he found solace and contentment, embracing the peaceful moments life had to offer. Loving son of Joan Van Alstyne and the late Charles Van Alstyne, Sr. Husband of the late Kathleen Anne Chalfont Van Alstyne. Beloved father of Shana (Bruce) Stuto and grandfather to Ayla, Angelo and Christian Stuto. Father of Janet Van Alstyne and grandfather of Alexis and Taylor Leonard. He leaves behind his siblings, Barbara (Joe) Cuzdey, John Van Alstyne (Penny Bonesteel), and the late Janet Van Alstyne; nephew, Patrick (Jamie) Bernard and niece, Stasha Cuzdey (Robert Simmons); sister-in-law, Lorrie (John) Thomas; and his loving friend Darlene Stuto.
