Obituary of Steven D. Menyuk

Please share a memory of Steven to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Rensselaer-Steven Menyuk, born June 6, 1944 to Hyman Menyuk and Evelyn (née Cholmar) Menyuk of Far Rockaway, NY passed away in Schenectady, NY on March 5, 2022 after an extended illness, having left his beloved tri-state area to stay with his son over the course of the pandemic. Steven spent his childhood growing up in Far Rockaway in Queens, NY and Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before continuing on to become a 1966 graduate of Harpur College/SUNY Binghamton with a BA in Physics. SUNY Binghamton is also where he met his wife, Gail (née Johnson) Menyuk, and they were married in 1968.

He spent much of his adult life in Central New Jersey, where he found employment with AT&T in 1970 as a Systems Analyst. He stayed in that position for his entire 31 year career, though due to the AT&T split in 1984, he also performed that role at Bellcore, and finally Telcordia, before retiring in 2002.  Over the course of that time, he supported his wife’s decision to enroll in a night school program at Rutgers Law in 1978, which led her to a successful career culminating in being appointed to the Tax Court as a judge, as well as enjoying racquetball with his co-workers, developing a love of sampling local restaurants and craft beers along with his wife and friends, and trying (though sometimes failing) to help his children with their math homework. Hard of hearing from a young age, Steven had a love of loud music, even if he couldn’t hear the words, and would often repeat back to you what he thought you might have said, even when – especially when – it made no sense. He told terrible jokes and enjoyed incredibly spicy foods, traits he passed along to his son.

Upon his wife’s retirement in 2013, Steven and Gail moved to Center City Philadelphia, where they spent the last years of their lives enjoying the museums, orchestral performances, and restaurants that the city had to offer.

He is predeceased by his wife Gail, and is survived by his sister, Barbara Amster; his children Brian and Jill Menyuk; and grandchildren Madeleine Kelly, Guinevere Menyuk, and Nathaniel Kelly.
