Mary Ellen Murin of Rensselaer, NY, formerly of West Oneonta, NY passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021. She was 88 years old. Mary Ellen was born in Elizabeth, NJ. She graduated from Linden High School, Linden, NJ in 1950. She attended Trenton State Teachers College in NJ and graduated in 1954. She taught school for one year. On September 17, 1955, she married George P. Murin in Linden, NJ. Mary Ellen and George raised their nine children in Linden until his retirement from the Linden Police Force in 1976. They moved the family to Schenevus, NY. As a full time mother and homemaker, she still found time to volunteer with The League of Women Voters and be active in The Catholic Church. When her children were older Mary Ellen had a number of jobs - reporter for The Daily Star, Census Taker, and Tax Assessor and then Bookkeeper for the Town of Maryland. She also worked in the Greenleaf Outlet Store for her dear friend Marie Roberts. In 1992, Mary Ellen and George relocated to West Oneonta, NY. In 2011 they moved from West Oneonta to Franciscan Heights Senior Community in Rensselaer, NY. Mary Ellen and George travelled extensively through Europe and saw many wonderful sights. Mary Ellen had an innate curiosity and life long love for learning, especially American history. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, Words with Friends and doing crossword puzzles. She was also fascinated by family genealogy. Mary Ellen was a devout Catholic who led Bible study for a group of Christians at Franciscan Heights. Mary Ellen was predeceased by her husband George and her son Michael. She is survived by her children, Peter A. and wife Robin, Patricia, John S., Mary L., Joseph P., Barbara A., Maureen and husband John, and Andrew V. and wife Sara; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Murin, John P. and Ian. P. Giannone. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Demetrice Lawson, her aide and companion for the past three years for her care, kindness and devotion to Mary Ellen. As well as to Dr. Rufus P. Collea whose expert care and bedside manner enriched her life. Relatives and friends are invited to call at W.J. Lyons Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer from 4 to 7 p.m on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. There will be a Mass of Christian burial celebrated by Fr. Tom Holmes at St. Henry’s, Averill Park on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Schenevus Cemetery in Schenevus, NY at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue Menands, NY 12204.
