Albany-Broderick RSM, Sister Marilyn, (Sister Regina Mary) died in St. Peter's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Thursday, June 1, 2017. She had been a Sister of Mercy for 73 years. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late William Broderick and Marion Flynn Broderick. Sister Marilyn earned a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose, Albany, and a master's degree from Siena College, Loudonville. She ministered as a teacher at St. Joseph's, St. Theresa of Avila, and Mercy High School in Albany; St. Agnes, Cohoes; St. Joseph's, Scotia; and St. John's Academy, Rensselaer. She taught in the CCD program at St James Parish, North Creek and coordinated the program for six years. Sister Marilyn taught a variety of subjects but especially loved making history come alive. She was a "people person", beloved by her students who both enjoyed and did well in her classes. Sister readily engaged others in conversation and could usually be found where the action was, whether that involved chaperoning five student trips to Europe or moderating glee clubs, science fairs, social action groups, talent shows, or one-act plays. She found time to give piano lessons as well. Sister Marilyn never spoke unkindly about others. After "retiring" from teaching, she spent twelve years managing the bookstore at Maria College, where, in addition to being organized and accurate, she was a Mercy presence to the students. She delighted in all the wonderful people she met there. Always adaptable, she took on clerical tasks, tutoring and substitute teaching at Blessed Sacrament School, Albany. Sister Marilyn was extremely devoted to her family and very proud of her Irish heritage. In addition to her parents, Sister Marilyn was predeceased by her sister, Regina Broderick Smith and her nephew, William Smith. She is survived by her niece, Mary Smith (Kevin Williams) and nephews Michael and Donald Smith (Laura), her niece-in-law Angela, grandniece Morgan and grandnephew, Owen, as well as by her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy. Viewing hours will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 5, in the Chapel of the Convent of Mercy, 634 New Scotland Avenue, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Prayer Service of Remembrance in the Chapel at 7:00 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the Convent of Mercy. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.
