Obituary of Carolyn Rosemary Maloy

Please share a memory of Carolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carolyn Mary Carhart Maloy, known throughout her life as Rosemary, died peacefully at the Heritage House Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Troy, NY on Friday, March 10, 2017, following a long illness. She was 89. Beloved wife of the late John "Jack" Maloy and the cherished mother of Mary Carolyn Schanz (Dan) of Menands, Terrence J. of Rensselaer, Sally Behan of Glens Falls, and Jackie Maloy (Todd Jones) of Las Vegas, NV, she was also the beloved grandmother of William and Elizabeth Schanz, John, Emily and Matthew Behan, and Liam and Donovan Jones. Rosemary was predeceased by her parents, beloved brother Randall, sister-in-law Margaret "Monie" Maloy, niece Deborah Carhart Smachetti, and son-in-law, John Blau. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her sisters-in-law Mary Lambert Carhart and Mary Maloy, along with eight nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews. Born November 12, 1927 in Albany, NY, Rosemary was the daughter of N. Orr and Sara (Doud) Carhart. She grew up in Coeymans and attended the local public elementary school. In tenth grade, she transferred to Vincentian Institute in Albany, NY, where she spent some of the happiest days of her life and made many lifelong friends. At graduation, she received the English Award, about which she was happy, and the Most Reserved Award, about which she was not. After graduating from the College of St. Rose in Albany in 1950, she worked as a secretary both in private offices and for the State of New York. It was at this time she was introduced to Jack by mutual friends. They were married at the Church of St. Patrick in Coeymans on June 18, 1955 and enjoyed 60 years of life together till Jack's passing in 2015. They lived for several years in Concord, NH, then moved back to Rensselaer where they would spend most of their married years. In Rensselaer, she was swept up into a group known as the "Card Club," whose friendship she enjoyed throughout her life. Rosemary stayed home with her children till they were all in school, then returned to work for New York State, ultimately retiring as Secretary to the Executive Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Taxation and Finance. She later returned to work, serving for ten years as an administrative assistant at The Evangelist newspaper of the Diocese of Albany. Rosemary wanted to be remembered as 'a good wife' and 'a good mother,' but those phrases don't begin to describe her kindness, generosity, patience, or love. She was always available to listen, to help, to cook, and to laugh. She whipped up delicious dinners from whatever was in the kitchen, sewed prom dresses and Halloween costumes with ease, looked out for her Tenth Street neighbors in times of distress, and volunteered at a shelter for the homeless for several years after retiring. A woman of great faith, she was a parishioner at St. Joseph's in Rensselaer for most of her adult life. Among other activities, she volunteered at the parish school and hosted a Renew group in her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph in Rensselaer on Monday, March 13, at 10 am. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rensselaer. Family and friends are invited to call at the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home 1700 Washington Avenue Rensselaer, on Sunday, March 12, from 3 to 6 pm. The family would like to thank the staffs of both the Terrace at Eddy Memorial and the Heritage House for their loving care of Rosemary over the past several years.
