John J. "Jack" Maloy, 93, died on Sunday, December 13, 2015. Jack was the beloved husband of Carolyn Rosemary (Carhart) Maloy and the cherished father of M. Carolyn (Daniel) Schanz, Terrence J., Sally Behan, and Jacqueline (Todd Jones) Maloy. He was also the loving grandfather of Elizabeth and William Schanz, John, Emily and Matthew Behan, and Liam and Donovan Jones. The son of Mary Elizabeth (Terry) and Joseph Maloy, Jack was born January 2, 1922, at his family home in Rensselaer. A proud Rensselaer native, he loved to tell stories of his time growing up in the city, playing second base on the Rensselaer Midgets baseball team and being educated by the Sisters of Mercy at St. John's Academy, from which, he claimed with a twinkle in his eye, to have been the only four-letter varsity athlete ever to graduate. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served in Alaska and Lake Placid, NY, during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1945. With help from the GI Bill, he attended Siena College, Loudonville, earning a Bachelor of Arts. Through mutual friends, he met Carolyn Rosemary Carhart of Coeymans, and they married on June 18, 1955. They were blessed with 60 years of life together. Keenly interested in history, politics, literature, and the English language, Jack spent most of his professional life as an editor with United Press International. He started as Night News Editor in Albany, NY, moved with Rosemary to Concord, NH to become the Bureau Manager there, then jumped at the opportunity to come back to live in Rensselaer and work in UPI's Albany Office once again, ultimately being named State News Editor. He later worked as the Water Commissioner of the City of Rensselaer. Jack loved to read, spending many sleepless hours in the middle of the night with a book in hand. He also loved to write, composing stories about George the Rabbit, who lived in the Rensselaer Hollow, for his children. Later in life, he wrote a story about George that was published in the Macmillian Reading program. As an active member of the Rensselaer Public Library System, he was proud to have helped reestablish the book collection after the School No. 2 fire. Serious about faith, family, and friendship, Jack took himself much less seriously, referring to himself as "the old insurance detective," a job he held briefly as a young man. His kindness, empathy, humor, and intelligence were gifts to all who knew him. He was a lifelong Catholic, a member of St. John the Evangelist parish in his youth, St. Joseph's in midlife and St. John the Evangelist - St. Joseph in later years. Jack was predeceased by his sister Margaret E. "Monie" Maloy, his brother Thomas P. Maloy and his son-in-law, John Blau. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, he is survived by his sister, Mary, of Albany and many beloved nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph in Rensselaer, New York on Thursday, December 17, at 10 am. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rensselaer. Friends and relatives are invited to call at Lyons Funeral Home, Rensselaer, on Wednesday, December 16, from 5 to 7 pm.
