East Greenbush- William Kevin Mahar, 90, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2025, with family at his side. Born on November 24, 1934, he was the son of John Aloysius Mahar and Anna Gabriel May. He was predeceased by four brothers, John, Thomas, Joseph, Edward and five sisters, Edith Mahar, Aileen Quigley, Sarah Matochik, Ann Gallagher and Mary Hogan. Bill graduated from St. John's HS in 1952 lettering in three sports. He studied at St. Andrew's Seminary, graduated from Siena College in 1960 and attended graduate courses at Union College and RPI. He worked as a Research Chemist at Huyck Corporation and retired from Sterling Organics in 1994. He married Carina A. Cagnina of Yonkers, NY on August 25, 1962, and resided on Red Mill Road for his entire life. Bill was a lifelong communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church and taught in the Religious Education Program for 15 years. He was a Lector, Eucharist Minister, Trustee, Pastoral Council and Bereavement Committee member. He was also a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society for 40 years and active with Cub Scouts and Little League. He is survived by his wife Carina, his eight children: Kenneth (Catherine), Karen (David), Martin (Lisa), Peter (Courtney), Thomas (Richelle), Kara (Paul), Paul (Jiang), Aileen (Scott), 23 grandchildren, Sean, Andrew, Mike, Rachael, Kyle, Carina, Farron, Shannon, Alexandria, Troy, Bailey, Shelby, Madison, Kathleen, Michael, Raymond, Nathaniel, Myles, Paul, Charlotte, Lucille, Vivian, and Meiliang, 9 great grandchildren, Tyler, Vincent, Cooper, Natalie, Benjamin, Claire, MacKenzie, Audrey and Theodore. Bill was proud of his Irish heritage, including watching Notre Dame football and serving his famous Irish coffee. He enjoyed the simple things in life; gardening, family gatherings, martinis with a twist of lemon and most of all being at home. We love you. Your integrity, generosity, humility, kindness, wisdom and humor will truly be missed! Be at peace until we meet again...Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill's family on Monday, February 10, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph's Church, 54 Herrick Street, Rensselaer, NY 12144, from 3-6PM. A funeral mass will be offered at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph's Church on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the above Parish.
