Walter R. Wiehler, 83, of North Greenbush died suddenly at home on Monday, September 12, 2016. Walter was the son of the late Walter and Ida (Szepek) Wiehler. He graduated from Albany High School, class of 1951 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute class of 1955. Upon graduating, Walter and Gwen were married and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he began working for Gulf Oil Company and started his graduate studies. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in May 1956 and discharged in April 1958. He completed his graduate studies in 1959 obtaining a master's degree in Chemistry from Drexel University and relocated back to the Albany area. Walter worked at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselaer for 32 years as an Analytical Chemist. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, traveling to Alaska, Ireland, Switzerland, and particularly Germany to visit family. He really enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Gwendolyn (Clarkson) Wiehler. He is survived by his sisters, Anna (late Walter) Bundy, and Helen (Richard) Murray; his children, Walter W. (Judy) Wiehler of Charlotte NC, Wendy (Robert Jensen) Giddings of West Sand Lake, Eric (Sharon) Wiehler of Sandown NH; his grandchildren, Amanda (Adam) Softy, Michael, Matthew and Brian Giddings, and Erica Wiehler; sister-in-law Dolores (the late Richard) VanPatten and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Calling hours are on Friday, September 16, 2016 from 4-7 at the W. J. Lyons Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave. Rensselaer. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.at the funeral home with Deacon Frank Lukovits officiating. Interment will follow at New Rural Cemetery in East Greenbush.
