Rensselaer- Joseph E. Olivan age 73 passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Albany Medical Center. Joe was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Lyon Mountain High School. After graduation he attended the University of Albany and obtained an associate's degree in business management. He worked for the Protective Loan Corporation and Internal Revenue Service retiring in the summer of 2017 after 30+ years of dedicated service. Mr. Olivan served in the US Army during Vietnam, receiving several medals upon his honorable discharge. He was a member of the Gerald O'Neil Post #1683. He was also an avid sports fan including the Yankees, Giants, Notre Dame and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Joe loved to cook but his biggest joy was spending time with his family, laughing and joking especially with his grandsons, Zach and Evan. Son of the late Jesse and Mary Olivan. Husband of 44 years to Kathleen M. (Galloway) Olivan. Father of Bryan (Stacy) Olivan, Shannon (Bob) Atty and Erin Olivan (Fiancé Chris Goetchius). Grandfather of Zachary and Evan Olivan. Brother of Joan (Bill) O'Malley and the late Kenneth Olivan, Cynthia Gillette and Mary Ellen O'Connell. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at 10am in the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave., Rensselaer. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mohawk-Hudson Humane Society 3 Oakland Ave. Menands, NY 12204.
