East Greenbush- John A. Thornton passed away peacefully on October 19, 2018. John was born in Albany on August 12, 1936. He was a graduate of Albany High School, where he was a three-letter varsity athlete. John received his bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose. He had a thirst for learning and regularly attended spring and fall semesters. He was inducted into the Phi Sigma Tau International Honor Society. John was a proud veteran of US Marine Corps. He retired as a Lieutenant from the Albany firefighters after 19 years of service. He loved sports," Go Yankees" was his favorite saying and he never missed a Giants game. John was Charter Chaplain of the Kinderhook Elks and a volunteer for hospice. His love of life rubbed off on many people who reveled in his sense of humor and happy spirit. John's long fight against cancer will leave a lasting impression on the people who witnessed his brave warrior spirit. He never gave up hope and kept his beautiful smile going to his last day. John is survived by his wife Joanna Thornton, his children Holly Nolan (Tom), Lori Race (Jeff), Arthur Thornton (Emily), Dave O'Donnell (Laura) and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter. Many thanks are given to the caring and kind owners of Ludder's County Home and Commmunity Hospice. Funeral from the W. J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue Rensselaer Friday afternoon at 12:00. All are welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held at the funeral Friday prior to the service from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery Menands.
