John Monahan

Rensselaer- John F. Monahan, Sr. age 93 yrs. of Rensselaer passed away at Samaritan Hospital Hospice on Sunday, Sept. 25. 2016. He was born in New York City and lived in Nassau before moving to Rensselaer in the early 1980's. Mr. Monahan retired as a bus inspector for the NYS Dept. of Transportation. John was a US Army veteran of WW II in Gen. George S. Patton's Third Army instrumental in the Battle of the Bulge and was a member of the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post #1520 in Albany, life member of the Rensselaer Lodge of Elks BPOE # 2073 and the Chandler Young VFW Post #8162 in Nassau. He enjoyed hunting,fishing, golf and traveling with his wife Barbara. Husband of Barbara Williams Wiltse Monahan and the late Blanche L. Skidmore Monahan. Father of John F. Monahan, Jr. (Joanne) and Michael R. Monahan (Mary Ellen). Step-father of Kathleen Wiltse, Carol Ann Wiltse, Dan Wiltse (Marybeth) and Susan Wiltse (Glenn). Grandfather of Michael T. Monahan, Joseph Monahan, Kathleen Monahan, Clare Monahan, Shaun Monahan and Brian Monahan. Step-grandfather of Christopher Renslow and James Wiltse. Brother of Edward Monahan and the late James and Vincent Monahan. Also survived by 5 great-granchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the W. J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home 1700 Washington Avenue Thursday morning at 9:00 and 10:00 at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Church Herrick Street Rensselaer where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4-7 PM. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery East Greenbush.
