Rensselaer- Philip Brady Smith, age 65 of Fourth Street, died Thursday, July 7, 2016 at home. He was born in Albany Oct. 2, 1950 and was a lifelong resident of Rensselaer. Mr. Smith served as Fire Chief for the City of Rensselaer from May 1993 until 1998. Chief Smith first joined the Rensselaer Fire Department in 1969 and served until 1972 when he joined the Albany Fire Department. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1988 of Engine #2 in Arbor Hill and served until his retirement in 1998. Son of the late Philip R. and Rose M. Brady Smith, husband of Linda R. Burnham Smith of Rensselaer, Father of Shaun C. Smith (Staci) of Bethlehem and Sidney C. Smith (Maria) of Schodack. Brother of Michael J. (Dianne) Smith of Malta, Stephen G. Smith of Rensselaer and Alicia A. Smith of Schenectady. Grandfather of Sierra A., Darien K., Hayley M., Alexus M., Sydney C., and Adeon B. Smith. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral from the W. J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home , 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer Monday morning July 11 at 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Church, Herrick Street Rensselaer where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2-6 PM. Interment in New Rural Cemetery East Greenbush will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at Albany Medical Center, New Scotland Avenue, Albany NY 12208 or the future Albany Fire Museum C/O W. J. Lyons Funeral Home.
